SharkSkin® Translucent Exterior Wood Stain is an oil/alkyd hybrid that protects exterior wood while leaving its grain and texture visible. Plant-based oils help it penetrate, while alkyd resins add toughness and wear resistance. Transparent iron oxide pigments provide UV protection.
Where to use it
For decks, pool and hot-tub surrounds, benches, stairs, railings, siding, outdoor furniture, trim, lattice, doors, spindles, timber frames and wood fences.
Preparation
Remove dirt, mildew, algae and loose coatings so the stain can penetrate bare wood. Rinse and allow the wood to dry thoroughly. Wood or composite moisture content must be below 14%, checked with a moisture meter. Replace damaged boards and protect surrounding plants.
Application and limitations
Apply one coat only. Stir periodically and work along the boards, avoiding hot sun. Wipe away glossy excess and stain on low-absorption areas after 15 minutes. Allow 24 hours before light foot traffic and 48 hours before replacing furniture or barbeques. Do not thin; clean tools with mineral spirits. Flammable: keep away from flames and sparks and use adequate ventilation. Stain-soaked rags and other materials can ignite spontaneously. Place used materials in a water-filled, sealed combustion-proof container, or lay flat to dry, then follow municipal disposal instructions. Read the current label and safety sheet.

- Surface temperature
- Check manufacturer instructions
The current English TDS does not publish numeric air or surface application limits. Wood or composite moisture must be strictly below 14%, measured with a moisture meter; this strict condition is recorded here rather than as an inclusive maximum. Avoid hot sun. Apply one coat to clean, thoroughly dry, bare wood. Allow 24 hours before light foot traffic and 48 hours before replacing furniture or barbeques. These waits are not a rain-free window. No numeric rain-free or post-application temperature interval is specified.
Check the air, the actual surface, overnight conditions and the full drying or curing period. The current product label takes precedence.

SharkSkin® Wood Cleaner & Brightener
Clean and brighten wood before applying SharkSkin stain.
Use for the cleaning step; rinse and let wood dry to the chosen stain’s current requirements.

SharkSkin® Wood Stain Stripper
Remove a failing or incompatible old finish when stripping is needed.
Not every deck needs stripping. For translucent stain, prepare bare wood; brighten if stripping causes tannin darkening.

SharkSkin® Mill Glaze Remover
Treat mill glaze when it prevents stain penetration.
Only where the wood needs glaze removal; follow preparation and drying instructions.
